In another installment exploring the past and current experiences of GSE graduates, I have been speaking (remotely) with CN. As you'll hear below, she is doing very well in her new job in the digital marketing sector. CN is very much missed here at HJU, but I have really enjoyed hearing about her new life, and how, now that she has been in the working world for a while, she looks back on her time here at HJU.
（GSE生の卒業後の様子をご紹介します。今回は、デジタル・マーケティングの仕事をしているC.N.さんに、学生時代のこと、仕事のことについて話を伺いました。）

CN always stood out in my memory as having particularly good English skills, but perhaps even more markedly, as being quite entrepreneurial and professional. I asked her first, about her current job, and whether she uses English.
（C.N.さんは、高い英語力を持っていただけでなく、学生時代から起業意欲がありました。まずは現在の仕事のことについて聞いてみましょう。）

After graduation, I was headhunted by a very small venture company in Tokyo. Currently, I am working professionally in digital marketing, as well as studying daily to improve my skills as a writer and in growth hacking (helping companies grow). In my daily work, I mostly work with Google. You probably use Google search when you shop or browse the internet, and it is no exaggeration to say that information is now the most important thing in global trade. As a writer, I write in Japanese about my specialty area, but the information I collect is primarily from international sites. In my work connected to growth hacking, the tools I use are also from overseas. Simply, these are things that you cannot master if you don't speak English. So, I'm not an active English-speaking professional such as people working in hotels or the airline industry, but I am grateful to be able to do work that I am proud of thanks to being able to use a variety of English expressions, have good reading comprehension, and other background information I developed during my studies in GSE.
（私は大学卒業後、東京のとても小さなベンチャー企業にスカウトされました。現在はデジタルマーケティング分野の専門職で、ライター兼グロースハッカー［会社や製品、サービスの成長を促すことを担う仕事］として日々切磋琢磨しています。職業柄、私の主戦場はGoogleです。皆さんもインターネットで調べ物をしたり、買い物をするときにはGoogleを使いますよね。世界市場のプラットフォームを使いこなすためには、情報が命と言っても過言ではありません。私はライターとして、専門分野について日本語で記事を書きますが、必ず海外のサイトから一次情報の収集をします。一方、グロースハッカーとして、海外のツールを使いこなして市場分析を行います。これらは、英語ができなければ使いこなせないものばかりです。私の仕事は、客室乗務員やホテルスタッフのように、業務内でアクティブに英語を話す職業ではありません。しかし、GSEでの学びを通して培ってきた多彩な英語表現や読解力、物事の背景を理解する力によって、自分が胸を張ってできる仕事ができることに喜びを感じています。）

Then, since I am sure many current and future students reading this want to be able to use English in their everyday lives, just like CN, I asked her what her top tips are for improving English skills.
（次に、英語力を磨くコツを教えてもらいました。）

I'm better at reading and writing than I am at speaking when it comes to English. Many people might suggest going to places where you can talk with native speakers, but I have a different view. I think you should focus on maintaining and developing your strengths. It's always possible to let others help who make up for your weaknesses. I think in society, people with expertise are more valuable than all-rounders. Do you tend to think in terms of your deficiencies ("my speaking is no better than a child!"), or in terms of strengths ("I am a match for anyone in this class when it comes to writing!"). I tend to think more like the latter, and so I tried to set and stay on top of writing challenges. Teachers will understand when you make an effort, and I tended to receive good feedback because I showed great commitment to what I was doing. Please feel at ease and make an effort in a direction that gives you confidence in yourself.
（私は英語での読み書きは得意ですが、話すことが苦手です。こんな時は普通なら、外国人と話せる場所に行けばいいとアドバイスしますよね。しかし、私は反対です。得意な能力を維持し、伸ばすことのほうに注力するべきです。自分が苦手なことは、それが得意な人にカバーしてもらえば大丈夫。それに、社会では、オールマイティな人よりも専門性に長けた人の方が市場価値があると思います。「あの子はとても話すのが上手だ、それに比べて私は...」と感じるか、「私は書くことならクラスの誰にも劣らない！」と感じるか。あなたはどちらが良いですか？私は後者が良かったため、ライティングの課題で常にトップを取れるよう頑張りました。また、先生方も、一人ひとりの頑張りをよく理解してくださいます。私は自分ができることに必死で取り組む姿勢を見せることで、良い評価をもらうことができました。皆さんも安心して、自分に自信が持てる方向性で努力をしてみてくださいね。）

I wondered how CN looks back at her time at HJU, what the highlights were, and whether she wishes she could give any advice to her younger self.
（次に、広島女学院大学での学生生活の思い出と、高校生や大学生の皆さんへのアドバイスを聞きました。）

At HJU, I was able to spend time with my classmates and teachers who all had their own unique talents. The highlight of my student life is the fieldwork in Vietnam that I participated in my first year. I put myself in an unfamiliar culture and worked on the program with Vietnamese students. I lived in an English-only environment for 24 hours and gave a presentation every night about what I learned by going to various places. The days were hard both physically and mentally, and I sometimes got sick. However, this experience is very useful for me, and in my current work at the venture company in Tokyo, which cannot afford to devote any resources to education or support, I am tough enough to cope. This is because in the marketing industry where there is no correct answer, even if you are cornered, you can laugh and say to yourself "It was even harder when I went to Vietnam." I realize that human beings can become stronger if they experience their limits. If you want to talk to yourself at that time, I would like to say "Good job! You're so tough!".
（広島女学院大学では、ユニークな才能に恵まれたクラスメイトや先生方と、伸び伸びと過ごすことができました。学生生活のハイライトは、一年次で参加したベトナムでのフィールドワークです。慣れない文化の中に身を置いて、ベトナムの学生たちと共にプログラムに取り組みました。24時間英語だけで生活をし、いろんな場所へ行って学んだことについて毎晩プレゼンテーションを行いました。心身ともにハードな日々で、不調を起こすこともありました。しかし、現在教育リソースなどに割く余裕もない東京のベンチャー企業で働く私にとっては、この経験が非常に役に立っています。正解のないマーケティング業で、自分が追い詰められても、「ベトナムに行った時はもっと辛かったな」と笑い飛ばせるからです。極限を経験していれば、人間は強くなれるということを私は実感しています。当時の自分に声をかけるなら、"Good job! You're so tough!" と言ってあげたいですね。）

Finally, some words of advice for high school students:
（それでは最後に高校生の皆さんに伝えたいことを聞いてみました。）

College students are genuinely free. University is a place where you can do anything at your own discretion. Just do whatever you are interested in or want to try. Of course, not only with academic work but also part-time jobs and hobbies are important. In any case, please visit new places and get a lot of inspiration. Each experience of success and failure will surely enrich your life. Hiroshima Jogakuin University has an environment where you can make the most of your successes and failures. Please look forward to meeting the teachers who are kind and give you advice, and your wonderful friends!
（大学生は本当に自由です。大学は、自分の裁量で何でもできてしまう場所です。自分が興味を持っていることや、チャレンジしてみたいことはとにかくやってみてください。もちろん学業だけでなく、アルバイトでも、趣味でもいいです。とにかくいろんな場所に行って、たくさんの刺激を受けてくださいね。一つひとつの成功と失敗の経験が、必ずあなたの人生を豊かにしてくれるはずです。広島女学院大学には、皆さんが成功と失敗を最大限に活かせるような環境が整っています。親身になってアドバイスをくれる先生方や、素敵な仲間たちとの出会いを楽しみにしていてくださいね！）

The final year of university is an important one for our seniors. Not only are they busy writing their theses, but also they are searching for jobs. Here at HJU, ensuring that every student receives the guidance and support necessary to find the right job for them is a really important part of our work. This includes the dedicated careers center, but also many other aspects of the teaching and curriculum.

In this article, the first in a series, we hear from some of our current seniors, and learn about how they started forming their career plans, as well as some tips and tricks about searching for jobs, making applications, attending interviews, and ultimately, making that all-important decision!

（そこで、現4年生に就職活動のための準備や実際の書類審査、面接などの体験を紹介してもらいたいと思います。）

First, we will hear from MM.

Can you tell us a little about how you started thinking about your future career?
（どのように将来のキャリアについて考え始めたか教えてください。）

Like many people, I didn't have one, specific job in mind. At first, this made me anxious, but after having a number of consultations at the University Career Centre, they helped me to approach the question of my future through thinking about myself. When I started thinking about my future career in this way, focusing on understanding how my unique character and skills would fit the companies and positions I was searching for, I realized that there were many more opportunities than I had first thought.
（私は皆さんと同じように、どのような仕事に就きたいか明白な考えがなく、悩んでいました。しかし、大学のキャリアセンターの方に相談したりすることで、自分自身のキャリアプランを考えることができました。私が将来就きたい職業を考え始めたとき、一番重視したことは、自分のキャラクターやスキルを活かすことができるかというところです。そのようにして企業を調べることで、視野が広がり、自分自身が思っていたより様々な職種・業種があることに気づく事ができました。）

When it came to finding jobs, making applications, and attending interviews, what were your experiences?
（実際の就職活動の様子を教えてください。）

I was quite active, which I think is important. I joined two one-day internships with different companies, which was a great chance for me to get some first-hand experience. In addition, I attended some online company presentation meetings, which were really useful, too. I also attended some in-person and some online job interviews. Each of these experiences was quite valuable for me, and I think that being active is a good way to find out what suits you, and what doesn't.
（私は行動に移すことがとても重要だと思いました。2つの企業の1Dayインターンシップに参加し、この経験は私にとってとてもいい機会でした。そして、いくつかのオンライン説明会にも参加し、これも私の就職活動においてとても役立ちました。また、対面とオンラインでの面接も経験し、どれも私には貴重な体験でした。何事も行動に移すことで、自分の向き不向きに気づく事ができました。）

What were the biggest challenges you faced, and what advice would you give to younger students who are thinking about their own futures?
（就職活動における最大のチャレンジは？また将来のキャリアについて、今まさに考えている学生へのアドバイスをお願いします。）

My biggest challenge was reviewing my past and experiences. I initially thought my experiences were uninteresting, and that I wouldn't have anything to share with the interviewer. However, by understanding the perspective of the company, who is just concerned with finding the right candidate, I realized that my education and work experiences were quite good things to share with them. I recommend to people who are starting out with job hunting to research quite a wide range of companies and positions. I noticed through my own experiences that even though it depends on the individual company, often, they're more interested in your personal motivations and for joining them and what skills you have than things like grades or academic background.
（私の大きなチャレンジは、自分自身の過去の経験を分析することです。最初は自分の経験したことなどを面接官に話せるような経験はないのではないかと思っていました。しかし、企業が求める人物像を理解することにより、私が学んできたことなどを企業側に伝えられるということに気づきました。私は視野を広くし、様々な職種や業種を見ることが就職活動においては大切だと思います。自分自身の就職活動を通して感じたことは、企業によって異なるので一概には言えませんが、成績や学歴などではなく、なぜここで働きたいかという志望動機と、どのようなスキルが活かせるのかということを企業側は知りたいのではないかということです。）

Finally, have you had any offers, or even, made any final decisions?
（現在の就職活動の状況や選考結果の状況を教えてください。）

I've been lucky enough to get a few offers already, and I've decided on one company that I'm excited to join. With the support of the staff here at HJU, and through being active and open-minded, I finally reached my goal of making a decision before I graduate.
（有難いことに、いくつかの企業から内々定をいただき、無事、就職先も決まったという状態です。この結果は、キャリアセンターの方々、そしてチューターの先生の手厚いサポートのお陰です。柔軟に考え、たくさんの企業を見て調べたため、卒業前に就職先を決めることができたと思っています。）

Well, I think that hearing from MM has helped us understand the job-hunting process from the student perspective, and I am sure that her experiences and advice will be useful for many of our readers. In the next installment of a series of reports from GSE graduates, we hear from MK. As you'll hear below, she is doing very well in her new job in the hospitality sector. She did well in many different ways during her time on the GSE course, and so, unsurprisingly, she is also doing well in her new working life. She has some interesting advice and encouragement for current students, but also for students who are considering joining us here at HJU.

（卒業生の活躍を紹介する学科ニュースの第5弾は、ホテルで接客業に携わるM.Kさんを紹介します。大学時代にGSE生として様々なことにチャレンジし、社会人となってさらに活躍の場を広げる彼女に、大学生、高校生の皆さんへのアドバイスはきっと参考になるはずです。）

First, and since MK is using English in her new job, and since she improved her language abilities a great deal during her 4 years at HJU, I asked her for some tips on how current students can follow in her footsteps and improve their English.

（M.K.さんは、現在日々英語を使って仕事をしています。そうした高い英語力を獲得するために、学生時代に努力した経験とコツを教えてもらいます。）

When I was a student, I tried my best to take classes which use only English. Instead of going abroad to study English, I chose to put myself in a local environment which was English-only, and gradually, I could understand English. Even if I couldn't always communicate with correct grammar, I did my best to use English. Also, I used my commuting time to memorize new vocabulary.

（学生時代はなるべく英語に触れる時間を増やすため、なるべく英語だけで授業を行う科目を選んでいました。英語圏への留学をしない代わりに英語のみの環境に自らを置くことで徐々に英語を理解できるようになり、正しい文章でなくてもなるべく英語を使い会話をするようにしていました。また、電車で通学していたので通学時間も英単語の勉強の時間にあてていました。）

Next, I asked MK about how current students can endeavor to work hard and improve themselves while at university.

（次に、大学生活をどのように活かし、自分自身を成長させるかについても教えてもらいました。）

As I wanted to get experiences that I couldn't get in the classroom, I did field experiences and an internship in Vietnam. Those were just for a short time, but they had an important impact on me. I could use English more than before, and through communicating with many people from different cultures and areas, I could understand more about culture and how to communicate with people who are not native speakers of English. Also, I did a part-time job where I could use English, so I could have the time to use English in my daily life.

（授業以外にもより実践的な経験もしたかった私は、フィールドワークやインターンシップなど短い期間ではありましたがベトナムで英語を使い活動をしました。文化の違いも理解しながら、またさまざまな英語に触れることで英語のネイティブではない方とのコミュニケーションも学ぶことが出来ました。また、アルバイトでも英語を使う機会をもてるよう、海外の方も利用するような場所を選び、普段から英語を使えるようにしました。）

I was curious about how MK uses English in her new job, so I asked her about it.

（M.K.さんが現在どのように英語を使って仕事に取り組んでいるかも聞いてみましょう。）

I'm working at a hotel now, so there are many foreign guests. At the restaurant where I'm working, I am the only staff member who can use English fluently. As I want to deliver the same good quality customer service to foreign customers as we give to Japanese ones, I search for the words to explain our dishes. Also, I've been translating the menu into English.

（私は今ホテルで働いているので、海外のお客様を相手に対応することが多くあります。レストラン部門で仕事をしているのですが、同じ部署で英語を話せる人はそう多くはありません。海外のお客様が来られた際には接客を任せてもらえます。なるべく日本人のお客様と同じようなサービスを提供できるようにレストランで必要な料理の知識を英語で説明できるように調べています。また、英語メニューの作成も任されています。）

Finally, some words of advice for high school students:
（それでは、最後に高校生の皆さんに伝えたいことを聞いてみました。）

The environment is one of the most important things. Put yourself into a place where you can do what you want to do, or be what you want to be. Make it so you have no choice but to act independently. Naturally, you can develop the skills and abilities that you need, and you can then go on to make even higher goals. Of course, this will be unsettling at first, but where there's a will, there's a way. Try once, and the result will follow.

（環境は何よりも大事です。自分がなりたいと思っている姿、やりたいと思っていることに一番近いところに自分自身を置いてみてください。やらざるを得ない状況を自らつくるのです。自然と自分に必要な力は身につきます。より上を目指す目標が出来ます。環境を変えることに不安は必ずありますが、為せば成るものです。1度勇気をもって挑戦してみて下さい。必ず結果はついてきます。）
