It is always a pleasure to be able to welcome new staff members into KEG. In this article, I have been speaking to the newest member of our team, Yoshikazu Nakashima. First, I asked him to briefly introduce himself, and then, we talked a little bit about his research interests and his perspective on teaching and education.

Hi, everyone. I'm Yoshikazu Nakashima, and I have just joined the Department of International English. I am very pleased to meet you all. I was born and grew up in Yamaguchi prefecture, and then I went to Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. I actually majored in Italian, but now I am focused on English Education. I live in Hiroshima now, and I love the beautiful nature here. I love travelling and walking in nature in my free time. I am very happy to be joining the team here at HJU.
（皆さんこんにちは。中島義和です。この度、新たに国際英語学科に仲間入りしました。皆さんにお会いできてとてもうれしく思います。私は山口県で生まれ育ち、高校卒業後は東京外国語大学に進学しました。大学ではイタリア語を専攻していましたが、現在は英語教育に重点を置いて取り組んでいます。今は広島に住んでいて、広島の美しい自然（特に、川）にはいつも癒されています。時間があると、いろいろな場所に旅に出かけたり、広島はもちろん、見知らぬ土地を散策したりしています。今回、この広島女学院大学の一員になれたことをとても光栄に思います。）

Next, I asked Nakashima-sensei to tell us a little bit about his research, what classes he teaches, and his ideas about teaching.
（次に、中島先生の研究や担当授業、教授のスタイルについてお聞きしました。）

My specialist area is teaching methods. I want to help students become better teachers in the future. One idea I often think about is "knowing → thinking → acting", and I encourage my students to focus on creating activities using this process. I hope each student in my class can develop their own goals and purpose, and collaborate together successfully!
（私の専門分野は英語科教授法です。学生の皆さんが将来、より良い教師になるお手伝いができたらと日々考えています。私の授業や教授の根本となるアイデアの1つに、「知る→考える→行動する」というプロセスがあります。学生の皆さんには、このプロセスを体験・活用して、様々な学習活動や課題に取り組んでもらいたいと考えています。その中で、学生の皆さん一人ひとりが、それぞれの目標や目的を達成し、他者と協働して学びを深めてくれることを期待しています。）

Nakashima-sensei suggests "knowing, thinking, acting" as a good way to think about designing lessons.

Finally, I asked Nakashima-sensei what advice he would give to current students or those who are thinking of joining us.
（最後に、在学生の皆さんやこれから広島女学院大学への進学を考えている高校生の皆さんへのアドバイスをお願いしました。）

Please take on challenges! Your life here at HJU can be a source of many new experiences, and these are then valuable treasures that will help you become greater teachers, workers, family members, and friends in the future!

You may have read our recent article in which we heard from one of our newest students, including how she is studying for the TOEIC test, and what her English language learning goals are. In this article, we hear from another of our first-year students, who also has some great tips to share.
（前回の学科ニュースに続き、今回もTOEICのスコアアップを目指して努力をしている学生に話を聞きたいと思います。）

I asked NH to tell us about how she studies, what her future goals are, and what advice she would give to high school students who are thinking about majoring in English, but might not be familiar with the TOEIC test.
（一年生のN.H.さんに勉強法や将来の目標、高校生へのアドバイスなどを教えてもらいましょう。）

By studying past test questions, I am learning new vocabulary. Afterwards, I try to read back words that I didn't understand. My goal is to get a TOEIC score of 550 or more. In the future, I would like to get a job, such as a receptionist, and acquire English skills to help people from overseas. For the listening section, the speed is faster than you think, so it's a good idea to practice with past questions once beforehand. If you learn the vocabulary that appears in the TOEIC test, you can also use it for university entrance exams.
（過去問を通して、新しい単語などを習得しています。分からない単語は、後から読み返すようにしています。目標は、TOEICのスコアを550点以上にすることです。受付の仕事に就き、海外の人を手助けできる英語力を身につけたいです。リスニングの問題ではスピードが思っているより早いので、1度過去問で練習するといいと思います。TOEICに出る単語などを覚えると大学受験に生かせると思います。）

I think that NH makes an excellent point about how not just learning English, but getting used to different parts of the test is a really valuable part of practice, and as she recommends, using past exams and examples similar to the test can be a valuable strategy.

As you may remember from previous articles, here at the Department of International English, we have a STARS program that provides a comprehensive system of English language support. The five elements of the STARS program are: Step-up English, Total Seminar Support, Active English lessons, Real English, and Study Abroad. Students aim for scores in the TOEIC test or the Eiken test and when they achieve certain goals, they are awarded one of our STARS certificates. It's always a pleasure to see students of all grades and levels achieve their goals, and in this article, we hear from a student who has recently received their 2 Star certificate.

I asked AM to tell us about how she studies, what her future goals are, and what advice she would give to high school students who are thinking about majoring in English, but might not be familiar with the TOEIC test.
（一人目の学生A.M.さんに将来の目標とアドバイスを聞いてみましょう。）

"Since this was my first time taking the test, I bought a textbook called 'First TOEIC Listening and Reading Test Textbook for all Parts'. I read the explanations, and answered the questions. By the time I graduate from HJU, I hope to achieve Eiken Grade 1 and get a TOEIC score of 800 or higher. If you are thinking about working towards the test, don't hesitate to give it a try. Unlike Eiken, with TOEIC, there is no simple pass/fail, so you get feedback about your current level, understand your weak points, and work towards improving them."
（初めて受験するので、『はじめてのTOEIC LISTENING AND READINGテスト全パート教本』という本を買い、説明文等を読み、パートごとの問題を解きました。大学卒業までには英検は1級合格、TOEICは800点以上を目指しています。受けてみたいなら迷わず受けた方がいいと思います。英検とは違いTOEICは合否判定が無く、自分の今のレベルを知ることで自分の弱みがしっかり分かり、対策をすることができます。）

Well, congratulations to AM, and a big thank you for giving our readers some ideas about their own English-language certification goals. I am sure that she will continue working towards her own targets, making improvements every semester.
