In the next in a series of articles, we hear from MG, a recent HJU graduate who is now busy at work. As I mentioned in the previous articles, watching students graduate and then move on to new lives is a bittersweet experience. However, having spoken with MG this week, and hearing how well things are going in her new job, has been so positive. She has some useful ideas about learning and using English- so, let's see what she had to say. First MG spoke about how to improve your English level, whilst staying motivated.

（GSE生の卒業後の活躍の第二弾です。今回は、2019年度に卒業したMGさんに、仕事で多忙な日々の合間を縫って協力してもらいました。学生が卒業し、新しい一歩を踏み出すのを見送るのには寂しさを伴いますが、MGさんから前向きに仕事に取り組んでいるという嬉しい便りが届きました。まずは英語の勉強方法、活かし方を教えてもらいましょう。）

I studied English by taking notes on new vocabulary and English expressions in the GSE classes and whenever I was researching or writing my assignments. I also listened to TED Talks and podcasts in my free time to improve my listening skills. In addition, I improved my speaking ability to create more opportunities to actively speak English by communicating with international students at the university and by participating in international volunteer work. I think it is important to have fun studying English. I was able to continue my studies by motivating my future goals and favorite overseas trips. I often think of the expression: "Persistence will pay off." Please do your best and you will reach your goals!

（私は、GSEの授業や課題で新しいボキャブラリーや英語表現をノートにまとめるなどして、英語をインプットしました。また、通学時間を使ってTEDTalkやポッドキャストを聞いてリスニングの向上をはかりました。しかしそれだけではスピーキング力はつきません。私は大学内の留学生と日々コミュニケーションをとったり、国際ボランティアに参加するなど積極的に英語を話す機会を作りスピーキング力を上達させました。英語の勉強は楽しくすることが大切だと思います。自分の将来の目標や好きな海外旅行をモチベーションに勉強を継続させることができました。「継続は力なり」です。皆さんも目標に向かって頑張ってください。）

Next, I asked how MG, now that she is working and has graduated, looks back on her university time:
（次に卒業して現在社会人となった今、大学生活を振り返ってもらいました。）

You will always need positivity in your job. Therefore, please be conscious of keeping a positive attitude, such as actively speaking in class and participating in volunteer work in your university life. An enterprising attitude and ability to take action will be very useful in the workplace. I also recommend that you continue to study for and take the TOEIC test. I think there are many companies that will check your English skills by looking at your TOEIC score. I think it will be to your benefit if you get business English skills while you are a university student.

（仕事ではいつでも積極性が求められます。そこで皆さんも大学生活において積極的に授業で発言したり、ボランティアに参加したりなど前向きな姿勢を意識してみてください。そこで身に付けた自発的な姿勢、行動力は仕事において大いに役に立ちます。また、TOEICの勉強と受験を継続的にするのをおすすめします。仕事でもTOEICのスコアで英語力をはかる企業は多いと思います。大学生のうちにビジネス英語に慣れておくと皆さんの強みにもなると思います。）

Ok, so that's some solid advice from MG. As her teacher in many classes, I can confirm that she always wrote down new words, was conscious of her TOEIC score, and made steady progress through hard work and commitment.

（彼女のアドヴァイスは説得力があるものです。というのも彼女は大学での様々な授業で、新しい単語を書き取り、TOEICスコアの向上にも意欲的で、常に努力して力を尽くし、英語力を伸ばしてきたからです。）

Next, I asked her next about her new job, and how she uses English in her daily life:
（次に、仕事や日常生活でどのように英語を使っているか聞いてみます。）

Until June, there was training for new employees, and I learned about the history of the company and important things about workplace manners. Also, I took part in a lot of group work and presentations as team-building exercises. I made a presentation about the company for new employees and partners overseas and presented it in English using online video conferencing software. Not only was I able to communicate with overseas employees in English, but I also felt how the company was connected to overseas group companies. I think there will be many opportunities to use English at work. I continue to make an effort to study English.

（6月まで新入社員研修があり、会社の歴史やビジネスマナーについて学んできたとともに、グループワークやプレゼンテーションを通してチームビルディングを行いました。実際にまだ英語を使って仕事はしていませんが、海外の新入社員に向けて会社についてのプレゼンテーションを作り、オンラインビデオを使って英語で発表を行いました。そこで海外の社員と英語でコミュニケーションを図ることができただけでなく、会社がどのように海外のグループ会社と繋がっているのか感じ取ることができました。これからも仕事で英語を使う機会は多くあると思います。英語の勉強は継続的に行っていこうと思います。）

Finally, I asked MG if she has any words of advice for current or potential new students.

（最後に、大学生や高校生に向けてメッセージをもらいました。）

Do not be afraid of failure, and please challenge yourself a lot while you are a university student. You should be able to grow step by step through your experience and failures.

（大学生のうちに失敗を恐れず色んな事にチャレンジしてください。経験や失敗から一歩一歩と成長していけるはずです。応援しています。）

In this article, we hear from 4th year GSE student NM. She took part in the August 6th Peace Memorial Ceremony. Of course, this is a very important and challenging time for many people in and beyond Hiroshima. As I am certain many of you saw, either live or by video, the speakers had some important and thoughtful words to help us reflect.

（広島女学院では、毎年8月6日に平和祈念式を行います。式典では在学生代表が追悼のことばを述べ、今年はGSE生のNMさんがその役を務めました。広島だけでなく世界の平和にとって重要なこの日に、自ら志願してこの大役を務めたNMさんに当日の様子と想いを聞きました。）

The event was held in a hall, as a result of the current circumstances. It was, of course, held in a safe environment, with strict social distancing. The prayer ceremony was held to commemorate those who died in the atomic bomb and their bereaved families, as well as to convey an understanding and respect to all hibakusha (those affected by the atomic bombing of Japan). As the ceremony began, a farewell hymn was played; we did not sing, but rather, etched the song into our hearts. Following this, Rev. Sawamura offered heartfelt prayers, with biblical extracts to help us reflect. Then, President Minato offered, as a ceremonial address, a powerful message in memory of those who lost their lives. This message contained a solemn reminder of our strong wish to abolish nuclear weapons from our world, and I deeply agreed with her words and ideas. President Minato also explained what happened when the bomb was dropped, which was, while painful to hear, the unavoidable truth. After this, the alumni ceremony was held. Then, as a representative of current students at Hiroshima Jogakuin University, I gave my speech. After I finished, there were other hymns and songs, which further added to the atmosphere of profound thoughtfulness and reflection. Rev. Sawamura then reaffirmed the themes of his speech and prayers, after which we moved tot he graves of the victims off the bombings, and offered flowers in respect and remembrance.

（今年の祈念式典は新型コロナウイルスの状況の配慮があり、ホールで行われました。出席者との社会的距離も十分に保たれ、安全な環境の下で行われました。この式典は、原子爆弾でお亡くなりになられた方々やそのご遺族に対しての追悼、そして被爆者の方々へ平和の思いを伝えるために行われました。初めに送別の讃美歌、405番が演奏されましたが、参列者は歌わずに、心にその歌詞を刻みました。その後、広島女学院大学宗教委員長の澤村先生がお祈りの言葉と聖書の一節を述べられました。続いて湊院長が式辞として、お亡くなりになられた方々を追悼する力強いお言葉を語られました。そのメッセージの中には核兵器廃絶を強く訴える想いが詰まっていました。私も核兵器廃絶についてスピーチに綴っていたので、院長のお考えに深く賛成しました。さらに、原子爆弾が落とされた時の状況も説明され、胸が痛くなる話ではありましたが、それが実際に起こった事だと自分自身に言い聞かせました。同窓会長による式辞が続き、その後私のスピーチがあり、大学生らしく精一杯想いを込めて想いを伝えました。私のスピーチが終わった後、讃美歌が流れ、再び澤村先生による祈りの言葉が述べられました。最後に、全てのスピーチや演奏が終了した後、私たちは原子爆弾で亡くなられた方々の遺骨が納められているお墓に移動し、献花をしました。）

Flowers are Offered in Respect and Remembrance.

In my speech, I talked about how the world thinks of nuclear weapons, and about Setsuko Thurlow, a graduate of Hiroshima Jogakuin University who was a victim of the atomic bombing. I also reflected on what is being done about this issue now, about how there are fewer people who were affected by the bombing, as well as the impact of the coronavirus in the world right now and the importance of our surviving it.

（私のスピーチでは、主に世界が核兵器についてどのように考えているのか、広島女学院大学を卒業され、また原子爆弾の被害者である私たちの先輩、サーロー節子さんが現在、世界に向けてどのような活動をされているのか、原子爆弾の被害にあった人々が実際に減少している事、そして新型コロナウイルスが世界に与えている影響と今の状況を世界で乗り切るために大切な事について話しました。）

NM Gives Her Speech.

The following is an extract from NM's speech（NMさんの追悼のことばを紹介します。実際には日本語でスピーチを行いましたが、英語訳も併記します。）:

"今から3年前、国連で核兵器禁止条約が採択され、現在、39か国が批准国となり、残り11か国の批准によって条約が効力を持つことができます。ここまで達成できたのも、サーロー節子さんが世界平和について強く語り継がれてきたからではないでしょうか。（中略）今年は新型コロナウイルスという世界を脅かすウイルスが蔓延していますが、この状況は、お互いを助け合い、協力し合い、思いやる大切さを私たちに教えているのではないでしょうか。"　

（Three years ago the United Nations adopted The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and now 39 countries have ratified the treaty, with 11 more countries' ratification needed to bring it into effect. Isn't this because of the words about world peace of Setsuko Thurlow? [...] The recent coronavirus, which threatens the world, is widespread this year, but doesn't this also teach us about the importance of working together, of cooperating?）

I think it is crucial to think about what actions we can take to prevent the reoccurrence of the tragic event that took place 75 years ago. As I mentioned, that each year we see fewer of those people touched by those events is sad. The reality is that there will be not as many people in the future to talk about the misery of atomic bombs. In order to prevent their stories from being forgotten, I think the young people of Hiroshima should stand up, take action, and create change.

（今から75年前に起こった悲惨な出来事を二度と起こさないために、今私たちができる事を考える時間がとても大切だと思います。先ほど述べたように、時が進むにつれて原子爆弾で亡くなった人々の数が減少してきています。その悲しい現実から、これから未来で原子爆弾の悲惨さについて語る事ができる人が僅かになることが予測されるでしょう。それを防ぐためにも、私たち若い世代が広島人として立ち上がり、アクションを起こし、受け継いでいくべきだと思います。）

A Solemn moment of Thought and Reflection.

国際英語学科の教員、戸田慧先生の著書、『英米文学者と読む「約束のネバーランド」』（集英社新書）が8月17日に出版されました。

『週刊少年ジャンプ』で連載された人気漫画『約束のネバーランド』を、イギリス児童文学やイギリスの歴史や文化との関係、そしてキリスト教やユダヤ教などとの結びつきといった観点から読み解いた考察本です。漫画の画像や、文学、文化に関連する写真などをふんだんに取り入れてあるので、楽しみながら英米文学や文化のことを学ぶこともできます。

もともと『約束のネバーランド』の大ファンだったという戸田先生。これまで「英語児童文学」の授業などでルイス・キャロルの『不思議の国のアリス』やJ.M.バリーの『ピーター・パン』の説明をする時に、漫画『約束のネバーランド』との関係についても紹介してきました。本書はその授業の内容をさらに発展させて書かれたものです。例えば、第1章では『不思議の国のアリス』や『ピーター・パン』、『指輪物語』のようなイギリス児童文学と、『約束のネバーランド』の中にちりばめられたさまざまなモチーフやキャラクターの関連性に注目しました。漫画の中に隠された意味について読み解くだけでなく、『不思議の国のアリス』に登場する白ウサギや帽子屋などの不思議な住人たちが、一体何を象徴しているのかを明らかにするなど、イギリス児童文学に関する一歩踏み込んだ考察も行っています。

この第1章の内容を、8月23日（日）の本学オープンキャンパスで模擬授業「イギリス児童文学と『約束のネバーランド』」として紹介予定です。漫画を読んだことがある方はもちろん、英語で小説を読み、イギリスの文化について学びながら物語の意味や象徴について考える大学の授業がどんなものか興味のある方は、ぜひ参加していただきたいです。お待ちしています！
