The U.S.-Japan Council is an organization that is committed to many kinds of economic, political and social projects that strengthen the relationship between the United States and Japan. Recently, one of their programs has been the 'Japanese American Storytelling Program' (JASP), which speaks to audiences in both Japan and the United States about a range of issues, especially history, diversity, empathy, and connections between the two countries.
（米日カウンシルは、日本とアメリカの関係性をより深めるために、経済的、政治的、社会的なプロジェクトに色々な形で取り組んでいる組織です。近年、このカウンシルのメンバーにより、"Japanese American Storytelling Program"（JASP、「日系アメリカ人ストーリーテリング・プログラム」）がその一環として生まれ、主に歴史、多様性、共感、そして二国間の繋がりなど、多岐にわたることがらについて、日本とアメリカ両方の国民に向けて話をする機会を設けています。）

Recently, some Global Studies in English course (GSE) students were very lucky to be invited to an interactive session hosted by James Minamoto. Joining us online, he gave an engaging and interesting class, entitled 'Resilence'. In this story, we follow the life of a Japanese-American girl, who leaves Hiroshima for the United States, is forced back to Japan, but eventually, returns to the United States. In the course of her life, she faces challenges that are difficult to imagine, and throughout the lecture, students answered questions, explained their own feelings, and tried to put themselves in the shoes of others.
（先日、Global Studies in English（GSE）コースの学生がJASPのジェームズ・ミナモト氏の主催するインタラクティブセッションに招待される機会に恵まれました。オンラインで開催されたそのセッションで、ミナモト氏は「レジリエンス （立ち直る力）」と題し、興味深く、魅力的な講義をしてくださいました。講義の中で、ある日系人の少女が広島からアメリカに渡り、日本に強制的に連れ戻されるも最終的にはアメリカに戻ったという話を聞きました。彼女はその人生において想像もつかないような苦難に直面するのですが、レクチャーに参加した学生は質問に答えたり、自らの考えを説明したり、相手と同じ目線に立とうとしていました。）

I asked Mr Minamoto if he would share his motivations for this program, and how he felt about the session here at Hiroshima Jogakuin University.
（ミナモト氏に、このセッションを開催したきっかけと、本学でのセッションの感想を伺いました。）

"I thoroughly enjoyed presenting the story of my mother's challenges and resilience to the GSE students, as well as discussing their insightful questions and comments. Through our Japanese American Storytelling Program, we try to pass on positive messages to university students all throughout Japan - the future leaders of the country. Thank you for giving us this wonderful opportunity."
（GSEの皆さんに私の母の挑戦と再起の物語をお伝えできて光栄でしたし、また皆さんの鋭い質問や洞察力にあふれたコメントを聞くことが出来たことも喜ばしく感じました。このJASPプロジェクトを通して、日本の未来を担う大学生に明るいメッセージを伝えられたらと考えています。このような素晴らしい機会を与えてくださりありがとうございました。）

The students themselves did a good job of engaging with difficult topics and showed empathy and deep reflection when asked questions. I asked one of the students to share her perspective on the seminar:
（GSEの学生もまた、難しいテーマに懸命に取り組み、質問に対して共感や深い考察を示していました。参加した学生の1人に話を聞きました。）

"I liked how the speaker told us about the story. The message of the story can be clearly felt, and some parts I could easily relate to my own life, which impressed me greatly. I know how it feels when other people treat us differently. When I feel like giving up, I remember that life isn't always rainbows and butterflies and that there must be rain sometimes, and we must try to move on and always try our best. After this seminar, I will be more motivated, and I want to be strong, like the speaker's mother was, in facing challenges".
（ミナモト氏の話し方に感銘を受けました。ミナモト氏のお母様の物語に込められたメッセージがすごく伝わってきました。いくつかの部分は私自身の人生にも関係している部分があるように思えて、とても感動しました。他の人に違った風に扱われた時の気持ちは私も分かります。もし、この先私がくじけそうになった時、人生は楽しい事ばかりじゃなく、時には雨が降るものだということを思い出します。だからこそいつも全力で、前を向いていかなければと思います。レクチャーを通して、私はより一層やる気を貰え、ミナモト氏のお母様がトラブルを乗り越えたように、私も強くありたいと思います。）

Through images and our speaker's skill, students could come to understand the experience of the real people in the story.
（映像と講演者の巧みな話し方のおかげで、物語に登場する実在人物の体験を理解することができました。）

In the GSE course, we are always trying to connect topics in the classroom with the real world. Through real-life stories and the generosity of Mr Minamoto and his colleagues in the JASP program of the U.S.-Japan Council, we had an enjoyable afternoon. Thank you!

It is always a pleasure to be able to welcome new staff members into KEG. In this article, I have been speaking to the newest member of our team, Yoshikazu Nakashima. First, I asked him to briefly introduce himself, and then, we talked a little bit about his research interests and his perspective on teaching and education.
（新しいスタッフをお迎えすることができるのはいつでも嬉しいことですね。さて、この記事では、国際英語学科の新しいメンバーである中島義和先生をご紹介します。最初に簡単に自己紹介をしてもらい、次に彼の研究や興味・関心、教育についての考えをお話ししてもらいました。）

Hi, everyone. I'm Yoshikazu Nakashima, and I have just joined the Department of International English. I am very pleased to meet you all. I was born and grew up in Yamaguchi prefecture, and then I went to Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. I actually majored in Italian, but now I am focused on English Education. I live in Hiroshima now, and I love the beautiful nature here. I love travelling and walking in nature in my free time. I am very happy to be joining the team here at HJU.
（皆さんこんにちは。中島義和です。この度、新たに国際英語学科に仲間入りしました。皆さんにお会いできてとてもうれしく思います。私は山口県で生まれ育ち、高校卒業後は東京外国語大学に進学しました。大学ではイタリア語を専攻していましたが、現在は英語教育に重点を置いて取り組んでいます。今は広島に住んでいて、広島の美しい自然（特に、川）にはいつも癒されています。時間があると、いろいろな場所に旅に出かけたり、広島はもちろん、見知らぬ土地を散策したりしています。今回、この広島女学院大学の一員になれたことをとても光栄に思います。）

Next, I asked Nakashima-sensei to tell us a little bit about his research, what classes he teaches, and his ideas about teaching.
（次に、中島先生の研究や担当授業、教授のスタイルについてお聞きしました。）

My specialist area is teaching methods. I want to help students become better teachers in the future. One idea I often think about is "knowing → thinking → acting", and I encourage my students to focus on creating activities using this process. I hope each student in my class can develop their own goals and purpose, and collaborate together successfully!
（私の専門分野は英語科教授法です。学生の皆さんが将来、より良い教師になるお手伝いができたらと日々考えています。私の授業や教授の根本となるアイデアの1つに、「知る→考える→行動する」というプロセスがあります。学生の皆さんには、このプロセスを体験・活用して、様々な学習活動や課題に取り組んでもらいたいと考えています。その中で、学生の皆さん一人ひとりが、それぞれの目標や目的を達成し、他者と協働して学びを深めてくれることを期待しています。）

Nakashima-sensei suggests "knowing, thinking, acting" as a good way to think about designing lessons.

Finally, I asked Nakashima-sensei what advice he would give to current students or those who are thinking of joining us.
（最後に、在学生の皆さんやこれから広島女学院大学への進学を考えている高校生の皆さんへのアドバイスをお願いしました。）

Please take on challenges! Your life here at HJU can be a source of many new experiences, and these are then valuable treasures that will help you become greater teachers, workers, family members, and friends in the future!

You may have read our recent article in which we heard from one of our newest students, including how she is studying for the TOEIC test, and what her English language learning goals are. In this article, we hear from another of our first-year students, who also has some great tips to share.
（前回の学科ニュースに続き、今回もTOEICのスコアアップを目指して努力をしている学生に話を聞きたいと思います。）

I asked NH to tell us about how she studies, what her future goals are, and what advice she would give to high school students who are thinking about majoring in English, but might not be familiar with the TOEIC test.
（一年生のN.H.さんに勉強法や将来の目標、高校生へのアドバイスなどを教えてもらいましょう。）

By studying past test questions, I am learning new vocabulary. Afterwards, I try to read back words that I didn't understand. My goal is to get a TOEIC score of 550 or more. In the future, I would like to get a job, such as a receptionist, and acquire English skills to help people from overseas. For the listening section, the speed is faster than you think, so it's a good idea to practice with past questions once beforehand. If you learn the vocabulary that appears in the TOEIC test, you can also use it for university entrance exams.
（過去問を通して、新しい単語などを習得しています。分からない単語は、後から読み返すようにしています。目標は、TOEICのスコアを550点以上にすることです。受付の仕事に就き、海外の人を手助けできる英語力を身につけたいです。リスニングの問題ではスピードが思っているより早いので、1度過去問で練習するといいと思います。TOEICに出る単語などを覚えると大学受験に生かせると思います。）

I think that NH makes an excellent point about how not just learning English, but getting used to different parts of the test is a really valuable part of practice, and as she recommends, using past exams and examples similar to the test can be a valuable strategy.
