One of the early events of the year is Orientation on Campus. This is a fun-filled day organized by students - the "OriCan leaders" as we call them. They did a wonderful job, as always, on behalf of the Department of International English.

The aim of the day is for first-year students to get to know each other, their sempai and their teachers in an informal way. We spend the day together, do a few activities, have fun and get to know each other.

There were lots of laughs while we played a series of different games. Teamwork was important and there was plenty of time to chat with everyone.

We're looking forward to next year's Orientation on Campus already!

Classes in the 2024 academic year started this week, following on from our orientation program and entrance ceremony. In our orientation program we welcomed back our older students and had the pleasure of meeting our new first-year students, exchange students from abroad, and some students who have transferred to us from other academic institutions.
（2024年度の授業が始まりました。それに先駆けてオリエンテーションと入学式が行われ、在学生たちがキャンパスに戻り、新入生、海外からの留学生、そして編入生などの新しい仲間も増えました。）

4th-year students happy to be back on campus at orientation

The weather was mixed, but the cherry blossoms on campus were still spectacular. New students were joined by their parents and the blossoms were a fitting backdrop to a lot of memorable photos.

Our entrance ceremony was held in Lambuth Hall with speeches, hymns, prayers and some glorious singing from the HJU choir.
（本学の入学式は礼拝形式で行われ、式辞や讃美歌の合唱に加え、学生クワイヤによる美しい歌声が式に花を添えました。）

After this memorable event, the first-year students made their way to the Department of International English welcome meeting for students and parents.
（入学式後は学科の教員たちが新入生と保護者の皆さんと対面し、歓迎の挨拶を行いました。）

We're sure the first weeks of university life will be a whirlwind for all our students - four years will go by in a flash, so we wish our new students the best of luck, and hope they make the most of each day at HJU.
（大学生活が始まり目まぐるしい毎日がスタートしましたが、4年間はあっという間です。新入生が皆、広島女学院大学で充実した楽しい日々を過ごせることを願っています。）

The Department of International English is looking forward to welcoming our new students this April. They can look forward to a comprehensive orientation program, an entrance ceremony, their first taste of classes in our department, an "Orientation on Campus" day packed with fun and games, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends among the cherry blossoms.
（新入生を迎える時期となりました。オリエンテーションや入学式はもちろん、さまざまなゲームを楽しむ「オリエンテーション・オン・キャンパス」などが予定されています。新入生の皆さんは桜が満開となるキャンパスで、大学のことを知り、そして新しい友人にも出会えることと思います。）

We are very much looking forward to meeting them all, introducing them to their sempai, and letting them know just how international the English language has become. The recent news that the Oxford English Dictionary has added 23 new Japanese words to its English dictionary may surprise some people, but it is testament to the close link between culture and language in a modern "borderless" world. Donburi, karaage, katsu, onigiri and Hiroshima's very own okonomiyaki are now English words! So are takoyaki, tonkatsu and yakiniku. And what's more, so is omotenashi! We hope that our new students will enjoy the feeling of omotenashi in our department and enjoy learning about language, culture, and global issues over the next four years. Welcome to you all!
