In the Department of International English we also encourage our students to continue learning away from campus. There are so many opportunities out there for students to have experiences that complement their on-campus studies. AF is one student who found one such off-campus experience that will have a great impact on her life. Here she tells us about it.
（大学生にとっての学びの機会は、大学のキャンパス内はもちろん、その外にもたくさんあります。今回のウェブニュースでは、広島市内の中学校で学校支援活動に取り組んだAFさんにその様子を聞きました。）

I volunteered at a middle school from January to March. The reason why I decided to do that is because I was fascinated to be able to experience the teachers' work at an actual school. During my volunteer work, I printed handouts and kept bulletin boards up to date, but also I had opportunities to observe classes and check the students' assignments as well. Through volunteering, I could see how teachers communicate with each student which I wouldn't be able to learn just by taking the classes at the university.
（この活動に参加しようと思ったきっかけは、「大学2年生という早い段階で、実際に学校の先生の仕事を間近で観たり経験できる」ことにとても魅力を感じたからです。学校支援活動では、印刷物や掲示物の張替えに加え、実際に授業を見学させていただいたり、提出物の確認をする機会もありました。この活動を通して、先生方のそれぞれの生徒への接し方など、大学の授業だけでは学べないことを多く間近で見ることができました。）

When I participated in the English class, I'd get some questions from students such as grammar things, and also had chances to speak in front of students. Through answering the questions, I realized that "in order to teach others, I have to learn deeply" and "I will have to be able to explain in various ways." What's more, it's important to come up with topics of conversation from everyday life that can be useful for explaining, and I have to get the talking skills that can lead students to be able to concentrate on classes or study.
（英語の授業に加わったときには、文法などの質問を受ける機会があったり、生徒の前で話す機会もありました。質問を受けた時には、普段は感覚的に使っている文法でも、「人に教えるためにはもっと自分も細かいところまで勉強をしなければいけない」ことや、「同じ内容でも色々な表現方法で説明できることが必要」だということに改めて気付きました。さらに、普段の生活の中から説明の例として使える話のネタを増やしていくことや、より多くの生徒が授業に向き合えるような話し方なども身に付ける必要があると感じました。）

Above all, this volunteer activity was the first time for me to be called "sensei" in my life. I was really happy and grateful for that. This experience will surely motivate me to work hard and make more efforts to make my dream come true, even if there will be a lot of hard things along the way. I appreciate the middle school which gave me a chance to do this volunteer activity, and of course, all the teachers who gave me lots of opportunities.
（最後に、今回初めて生徒とは違う立場で学校現場に行き、実際に学校内で「先生」と呼ばれたことを心から嬉しく思いました。将来本当に「先生」と呼ばれるようになるために、今後の勉強や試験などで大変なことがあったときには今回のボランティアの経験を思い出し、頑張りたいと思います。3か月間、受け入れてくださった中学校、そして、さまざまな経験の機会を与えてくださった先生方に本当に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。）

We are delighted that AF took the initiative to do such worthwhile volunteer work at a middle school. We are also very grateful to the school for giving her such a great opportunity and, of course, to AF for telling us about it all. It seems like she had a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

One of the early events of the year is Orientation on Campus. This is a fun-filled day organized by students - the "OriCan leaders" as we call them. They did a wonderful job, as always, on behalf of the Department of International English.

The aim of the day is for first-year students to get to know each other, their sempai and their teachers in an informal way. We spend the day together, do a few activities, have fun and get to know each other.

There were lots of laughs while we played a series of different games. Teamwork was important and there was plenty of time to chat with everyone.

We're looking forward to next year's Orientation on Campus already!

Classes in the 2024 academic year started this week, following on from our orientation program and entrance ceremony. In our orientation program we welcomed back our older students and had the pleasure of meeting our new first-year students, exchange students from abroad, and some students who have transferred to us from other academic institutions.
（2024年度の授業が始まりました。それに先駆けてオリエンテーションと入学式が行われ、在学生たちがキャンパスに戻り、新入生、海外からの留学生、そして編入生などの新しい仲間も増えました。）

4th-year students happy to be back on campus at orientation

The weather was mixed, but the cherry blossoms on campus were still spectacular. New students were joined by their parents and the blossoms were a fitting backdrop to a lot of memorable photos.

Our entrance ceremony was held in Lambuth Hall with speeches, hymns, prayers and some glorious singing from the HJU choir.
（本学の入学式は礼拝形式で行われ、式辞や讃美歌の合唱に加え、学生クワイヤによる美しい歌声が式に花を添えました。）

After this memorable event, the first-year students made their way to the Department of International English welcome meeting for students and parents.

We're sure the first weeks of university life will be a whirlwind for all our students - four years will go by in a flash, so we wish our new students the best of luck, and hope they make the most of each day at HJU.

The Department of International English is looking forward to welcoming our new students this April. They can look forward to a comprehensive orientation program, an entrance ceremony, their first taste of classes in our department, an "Orientation on Campus" day packed with fun and games, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends among the cherry blossoms.
（新入生を迎える時期となりました。オリエンテーションや入学式はもちろん、さまざまなゲームを楽しむ「オリエンテーション・オン・キャンパス」などが予定されています。新入生の皆さんは桜が満開となるキャンパスで、大学のことを知り、そして新しい友人にも出会えることと思います。）

We are very much looking forward to meeting them all, introducing them to their sempai, and letting them know just how international the English language has become. The recent news that the Oxford English Dictionary has added 23 new Japanese words to its English dictionary may surprise some people, but it is testament to the close link between culture and language in a modern "borderless" world. Donburi, karaage, katsu, onigiri and Hiroshima's very own okonomiyaki are now English words! So are takoyaki, tonkatsu and yakiniku. And what's more, so is omotenashi! We hope that our new students will enjoy the feeling of omotenashi in our department and enjoy learning about language, culture, and global issues over the next four years. Welcome to you all!
（国際英語学科の教員も皆、新入生の皆さんと会えることを楽しみにしています。先輩学生たちと出会い、英語という言語の国際性の奥深さをもっと知り、充実した学生生活を送ってもらいたいと思っています。つい先日、オックスフォード英語大辞典に新たに23もの日本語の言葉が加わりました。文化や言語からも、現代が「ボーダーレス」社会であることがよくわかります。「どんぶり」などの日本食、広島のご当地グルメの「お好み焼き」も今や「英語」です！「おもてなし」も新たに加えられた言葉の一つですが、これから学科の「おもてなし」を感じ、言語や文化、グローバルな問題について学び、4年間の学生生活を楽しみましょう。ようこそ、広島女学院大学へ！）

アメリカのノースカロライナ大学シャーロット校の学生28名が、本学で平和に関する授業を受け、また本学の学生と交流しました（詳細については、先日大学HPで紹介した記事をご覧ください）。
12月にカナダ留学から帰国した学生たちも参加しました。今度は自分たちがホスト役となり、日本に来た海外の学生と一緒に過ごした感想を紹介したいと思います。

まずは、午前中に縮景園を訪れ、日本ならではの文化を一緒に楽しんだKYさんの感想です。

When I arrived at Shukkeien, it was full of UNCC students. I got nervous before I went there, but there was nothing to worry about. They were nice to me. After we heard the guidance of Shukkeien, we talked a lot and got close during that time. One of the students had fed Koi carp before so we fed carp in the pond together. They said they had never seen colorful fish like carp in America. They also said that they love Japanese culture, especially anime, Pokemon, and video games. Because of the anime, they could speak Japanese a little. I was glad to know that Japanese culture is loved by many people.
（縮景園ではそれぞれが自由に見て回ったり、一緒に鯉に餌やりをしました。アメリカには鯉のような鮮やかな魚はいないと聞き驚きました。また、学生のみなさんは日本のアニメやゲームをよく知っていて好きだと言ってくれました。アニメのおかげで日本語を話せる人もいました。好きなキャラクターの話などをして仲良くなることができ、日本の文化が愛されていることを知れて嬉しかったです。）

午後に市内観光をしたAOさんは、カナダでの留学経験が役に立ったようです。

Our group went to play pool with American students. I was surprised that most of the American students had pool experience. Then, we went to a 100-yen store, a drugstore, and an anime goods store. The American students looked at all of them with interest. We went to a 100-yen shop and showed them around the store. I introduced to the American students the Japanese snacks, candies, and other sweets that were enjoyed by the locals when I studied in Canada. I was happy to realize that I was able to use what I had experienced during my study abroad in Canada in this volunteer activity.
（私たちのグループは、アメリカの学生とビリヤードをしました。その後、100円ショップに行き、店内を案内しました。私がカナダ留学した際に現地の人にも喜ばれた日本のお菓子を彼らに紹介しました。カナダ留学で経験したことをこのボランティアで活かすことができていると実感できました。）

Afterward, we separated into two groups for dinner at a shabu-shabu restarurant, since they had not had shabu-shabu yet. I was the only Japanese in my group. I was nervous, but I wanted them to enjoy Japanese food as much as possible. It was difficult to explain in English the meaning of the word "shabu-shabu," the way to eat it, how to use chopsticks, and how it tastes. They listened to my explanation to the end and tried it out. I was happy when they said "Delicious," "Thank you," or "It was a good memory." Above all, I felt happy that they enjoyed Japanese food.
（夕食には、食べたことのないと言っていたしゃぶしゃぶを食べました。私のグループには日本人が私だけだったので緊張しました。しかし、それよりも日本食を楽しんでもらいたいと強く思いました。「しゃぶしゃぶ」という言葉の意味やおいしい食べ方、箸の使い方、味の説明などについて英語で伝えることは難しかったけれど、彼らが私の説明を最後まで聞いてくれたり、実際に試してくれたりしました。彼らが「おいしい」や「ありがとう」、「いい思い出になった」と言ってくれると嬉しかったです。何よりも、日本食を楽しんでもらえて本当に良かったです。）

What impressed me most through this volunteer experience was the trust that the American students have in us, volunteer students. We were motivated by their willingness to listen to our suggestions and introductions and to accept them. I would like to actively participate if there are opportunities for cross-cultural exchange with students from other countries like this.
（このボランティアを通じて一番感じたことは、彼らが私たちのことを信頼してくれているということでした。私が提案したり、紹介したりすることを彼らは素直に聞き、それらを受け入れてくれる姿勢が見られ、私はやりがいを感じられました。このような海外の学生との交流の場があればまた参加したいと思います。）

皆、良い時間が過ごせたようですね。留学で異国に暮らしたからこそ感じたことや成長したことを、これからも様々な場で活かしてほしいです。
