We asked one of our international students to explain a little about her first impressions of life at HJU in the Department of International English.
（今回のウェブニュースでは、この4月に入学し、国際英語学科で学ぶ留学生をご紹介します。）

Hello, I'm Trang, now a 1st-year international student in the Department of International English at HJU. I'm from Vietnam and came to Japan two years and six months ago. Before I came to Japan, I was just a girl who always depended on my parents. That is why I decided to study abroad, to empower myself completely through this adventure.
（初めまして国際英語学科1年生の留学生、Trangです。ベトナム出身で、日本に来て2年半になります。日本に来る前はいつも親に頼ってばかりでしたが、そんな自分を変えるために挑戦しようと留学を決意しました。）

But why Japan and not another country? Originally, I'm a typical Asian girl, who always feels shy and not confident, but I thought I would get used to Japanese people soon. And I did, I got on well with Japanese life. Even though I feel more free here than in my hometown in Vietnam, I also got so much help from people I hadn't known, from teachers to Japanese strangers to colleagues in part-time jobs. At first I thought I would be a normal company employee in the future but now I'm in love with Hiroshima and Hiroshima people, so I really want to do something to help other foreigners, and especially contribute to the area's development.
（他でもない日本を選んだ理由は、他のアジア人の多くと同じように私はシャイで自分に自信がないので、日本に馴染みやすいのではないかと考えたからです。今では日本の生活にすっかり馴染んでいます。日本にいる方がより自由を感じますが、これまで先生方やアルバイト先の同僚、見知らぬ人など、たくさんの人に助けてもらってきました。将来は会社で働くのだろうと漠然と考えていましたが、今は広島という土地と広島の人々がとても気に入り、外国人を助けたり、この土地のために働いたりする仕事に就きたいと考えています。）

Because of my goals, I tried hard to study as a college student though the COVID-19 pandemic and, finally, now I'm in the International English Department of HJU.
（コロナウイルス感染症が流行していた間にも、目標に向かって勉強を続け、今この大学の国際英語学科で学んでいます。）

It is different from Japanese language school, where I couldn't have a chance to talk to Japanese people. In HJU, I met many Japanese girls and we are studying Japanese and English together. They are willing to be my friends, though I'm pretty shy and not confident because of my Japanese. In addition, I appreciate HJU for their dedicated help, they know how worried foreign students can be in a Japanese university. So I have a department teacher as my tutor; K.Y. and R.O. as my student senpai tutors; and also the International Center. They take care of me with tutor guidance every week, always asking how I feel about studying in HJU, and checking if I have any troubles or anxiety.
（日本語学校では、日本人と話す機会はありませんでしたが、大学では日本人の学生と一緒に英語と日本語を学んでいます。恥ずかしがり屋で自信がない私にも、友達ができました。大学の留学生へのサポートが充実していてとても感謝しています。例えば、チューターの先生や、上級生の学生チューター、国際交流センターの職員の皆さんがサポートしてくださいます。毎週会って話をするチューターの先生と学生は、大学での勉強のことや、不安がないかなどを気にかけてくださいます。）

Everything in HJU has been wonderful. The only unfortunate thing is that my 1st year has been really busy, so I couldn't join any clubs. However, I hope I can join some activities and clubs when I have time. Eventually, with all the devoted help, I feel more confident now and am really looking forward to the next four years in HJU. So I'm glad to be in HJU and hope my experience will help you.
（広島女学院での大学生活はとても楽しいです。ただ、1年生は授業のことでとても忙しく、部活動などができていません。時間に余裕ができたら課外活動にチャレンジしたいと思っています。さまざまなサポートのおかげで少しずつ自信も出てきて、これからの女学院での4年間がとても楽しみです。この大学で学べることに感謝し、また私の経験が参考になれば嬉しいです。）

It is always great to hear about the off-campus activities of our students. AF worked as a volunteer interpreter at the recent G7 summit. We asked her to tell us a bit about her experiences.
（学生たちはさまざまな課外活動に取り組んでいます。今回紹介する学生AFさんもまた、G7広島サミットで通訳ボランティアに挑戦しました。AFさんが英語と日本語で体験を綴ってくれました。）

Why did you do this volunteer work?
チャレンジのきっかけは？

Since I am majoring in the GSE course, I use English in my regular classes, and I've been feeling that I became able to speak English more fluently compared to before, so I want to use my improving English skills in practical situations. Also, there won't be so many opportunities for such great experiences in my future life so I thought that there was no choice other than taking on this challenge. For these reasons, I decided to apply for the volunteer work.

私はGSEを専攻しており、専門科目の授業では英語を使っているため、入学前に比べると英語を日常的に使えるようになってきていると感じています。そのため、少しずつ上達している英語力を実践的に授業以外の場でも使ってみたいと思いました。そしてなんといっても、このような機会は今後もうめったにないことだと思うので、挑戦しないという選択肢は無いと思い、このボランティアに応募しました。

What were the fun and satisfying points about it?
やりがいや面白さを教えてください。

During the G7 summit, I worked with people from some organizations, and some of them speak English fluently and answered questions immediately both in English and Japanese. When I saw their work, I admired them so much, and it helped me to improve my motivation to study English harder. Also, it helped me think about my future again and what kind of job opportunities are out there.

G7サミット期間中、私は、日本全国から派遣されている方々と働きました。彼らの中には、英語をとても流暢に話している人たちもおり、その人たちは、日本語であっても英語であっても聞かれたことに対しては迅速に答えていました。その姿を見て私は憧れを抱きました。同時に、英語の勉強に対するモチベーションの向上にもつながり、将来のキャリアについても視野が広がりました。

How have you changed and improved after doing it?
活動を通して自分が変わったところ、成長したところは？

Before the G7 summit, I had participated in one event as a volunteer interpreter. However, that time was the first time I had actually worked as a volunteer, and being nervous, I couldn't take part positively. At that time I really regretted my negative behavior and I decided to work without being afraid of making mistakes.

During the G7 summit, I worked at the International Media Center and especially at the Information counter and the catering booth. Unfortunately, there weren't enough opportunities to speak English, but I really wanted to speak English so I tried to speak to people in the area by myself. For example, when I felt that someone was worrying about something, I approached the person straight away and asked things such as 'May I help you?'. Even with such easy conversations, I hadn't been able to do that immediately until I was a high school student, so this time I felt that I had grown up in many ways.

サミット期間以前には、通訳ボランティアとしてサミット関連イベントに参加しました。そのとき、私は実際にボランティアとして参加するのが初めてだったため、緊張などがあり、積極的に行動することができませんでした。その日の夜、自分が何も役に立てなかったことにとても後悔し、次参加するときは、間違ってしまってもいいから、間違うことを恐れずに挑むことを心に決めました。

サミット期間中は、国際メディアセンターのインフォメーションカウンターや、世界中から来ているメディアの方が仕事をしている場所にあるケータリングスペースで活動しました。残念なことに、想像していたよりも英語を使う機会がありませんでした。しかし、何とかして英語を話す機会を作りたいと強く思ったため、待機中は周囲の状況をよく観察し、少しでも困っていそうな人を見つけたら、 "May I help you?" などと積極的に声をかけるように心がけました。そのような簡単な会話ではありましたが、高校生の時のことを考えると、即座に英語で話しかけることは出来なかったと思うので、そこでも自分の成長を感じられました。また、サミット期間以前の経験での反省点を少しでも活かせたのではないかなと思います。

What do you aim to do before graduation and what is your dream for the future?
大学卒業まで、また将来の目標や夢を教えてください。

Next semester, I will study abroad in the U.S. There must be many challenging things with my English abilities and also other things. However, as I am doing many activities now and learning many things from both successes and mistakes, I'll continue to do what I am. I believe that failure is one step that leads to my growth.

私は来学期に、アメリカに留学に行きます。留学では、英語力だけでなくそのほかにもたくさんの試練が待っていると思います。ですが、大学生になり、たくさんのことに挑戦しているうちに、上手くいったことだけでなく、失敗したことからもたくさんのことを学びました。私は、失敗こそ成功への一歩だと思っています。私は私らしく留学先でもやっていきたいと思います。

Can you give a message to high school students and juniors?
高校生や下級生へのメッセージをお願いします。

After I became a university student I tried to challenge myself with lots of new activities and this volunteer activity is one of them. Of course, I made lots of mistakes and did things I regret, but I am sure that my choice to join many activities was not wrong. In fact, not challenging anything would have been a real waste, so I would like you to challenge a wide range of things, even the things you are not interested in, because if you do that, you may be able to feel "I wasn't interested in it, but I was mistaken!"

私は大学生になり、今回のこのボランティアのほかにもたくさんのことに挑戦しています。もちろん、上手くいくことだけでなく、失敗をしたり、活動中に自分の行動について後悔をしたこともたくさんあります。ですが、それらの経験をすると決めたことは、決して間違った選択ではなかったと思っています、むしろ、挑戦しないことの方がもったいないと思います。私が皆さんに伝えたいことは、「色々な分野のことに挑戦してほしい」ということです。たとえ、興味のない分野のことでも、やってみたら意外と自分の興味の持てるものであることもあると思います！これから是非たくさんのことに積極的に挑戦してみてください！

国際英語学科の新しい留学「グローバル・アウトリーチ・プログラム」（以下、GOプログラム）が、いよいよ2023年夏から始まります。
すでに、参加予定の学生7名は留学に向けて準備を始めています。先日、留学先のオカナガン・カレッジ（カナダ　ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州）のスタッフ、サクラ・ヒラタ氏が来日して広島女学院大学に来てくださり、学生たちと交流する機会を設けました。

GOプログラムは、8月から12月までの約4ヶ月の語学研修プログラムです。カレッジ附属の語学施設で英語を学び、ホームステイでホストファミリーと一緒に生活をします。さまざまな課外活動の機会もあり、現地の学生や他の留学生と交流することができます。1年生からでも、どのレベルの英語力でも参加可能と、学生それぞれのめざす目標に合わせて学ぶことができます。

現地スタッフとの交流会では、学生たちが留学生活に備えてさまざまな質問をし、真剣な様子で話を聞いていました。海外体験は初めてという学生もいれば、親元を離れての生活が初めてという学生もいます。学生たちは皆、ワクワクする気持ちで留学を楽しみにしていますが、それと同時に不安もつきません。今回、学校での授業の様子、カナダでの生活のこと、ホームステイ先での生活についてのポイントなどについてヒラタさんから話を聞き、随分安心した表情が見られました。何より、フレンドリーで優しいスタッフと打ち解けて、随分気持ちも軽くなった様子です。
