In the Department of International English we have close contact with all our students. We can see their English improvement happening before our very eyes. We decided to ask one student who has studied with us for two years, YS, about her English language journey so far. Here she is ...

Q: In general, what do you do to make English part of your everyday life?（毎日英語をどのように取り入れていますか）

YS: To improve my English skills, I have tried to learn English while enjoying it. For example, I often watch videos in English and sometimes talk to myself in English. I think my university classes were a really good opportunity to improve my English speaking skills, and while I was studying abroad, I was surrounded by English, and that experience also helped me get used to using English.  

英語力を伸ばすために、普段から英語を楽しみながら勉強することを心がけてきました。例えば動画を英語で見たり、独り言を英語で言ってみたりしていました。そして大学の授業では、英語で話す機会が多くあり、スピーキング能力が伸びたと感じています。さらに留学で英語に囲まれる生活を送ったことで、英語を使うことや聞くことに慣れてきました。　

Q: I can understand how all those things have helped you to improve your English so much and you have reached a really impressive TOEIC score. How did you manage to specifically improve your TOEIC score so much?（TOEICのスコアが飛躍的に伸びましたね。どのような対策をしましたか）

YS: To improve my TOEIC score, I used an official TOEIC practice test book. I reviewed the book many times until I memorized every question. By doing that, I could remember all the English words and grammar that appeared in the passages. I also did shadowing for all the listening parts in the book.

TOEICのスコアを上げるために、私は公式問題集を使用していました。問題集に載っている問題をすべて覚えてしまうほど、何回も復習をしました。復習をすることで、問題に出た英単語や文法を覚えることができます。さらに、リスニングパートのシャドーイングも行いました。 

Q: Well that clearly takes a lot of dedication. Well done! Can you tell us a little about your motivations? What do you want to do with your English ability in the future?（将来はどのように英語力を活かしたいですか）

YS: In the future, I hope I will enjoy learning English and use English in my job. I haven't decided what industry I want to enter yet. However, I really like English and I have been able to continue studying it without stress, so I want to be surrounded by English in the future as well. I want to communicate with people in English and do my job in English. I also have a big dream of working abroad, such as on a business trip. 

私は将来、英語を楽しみながら学び続け、仕事で英語を使うことが目標です。まだ具体的な将来の夢は決まっていませんが、英語が好きという気持ちと、これまで勉強をストレス無く続けてこれたことから、将来も今と同じように英語に囲まれた生活を送りたいです。英語で人々とコミュニケーションを取り、仕事でも英語を使いたいです。そしていつか出張などで海外で仕事をするのが大きな夢です。
