This is the second report from our students in California.（カリフォルニア研修のリポートの第2弾をお届けします。）

On February 11th, we visited a Montessori school. Our schedule was moved up by one week, so we had to prepare quickly. Despite the rainy weather, we had a wonderful time with the students. We prepared two activities: Japanese calligraphy and making frog toys, visiting both lower and upper elementary classes.

2月11日、私たちはモンテッソーリ学校を訪問しました。予定が1週間前倒しになったため、急いで準備をしなければなりませんでした。突然の変更や雨で室内での活動になったにもかかわらず、生徒たちと素晴らしい時間を過ごすことができました。私たちは「書道」と「カエルのおもちゃ作り」の2つの活動を用意し、低学年と高学年の両方のクラスで実施しました。

This visit was a great opportunity to see Montessori education in practice. In this school, students proactively choose their own activities, and teachers support them by watching over their progress without interfering. Unlike Japanese schools, there were no fixed desks, and students moved freely between tasks without a rigid timetable. I was truly impressed by their independent attitude toward learning.

今回の訪問は、モンテッソーリ教育を実際に目にする絶好の機会でした。生徒たちが主体的に自分の活動を選び、先生は干渉しすぎることなく、彼らの成長を見守ることでサポートしています。日本の伝統的な学校とは異なり、固定された机はなく、生徒たちは時間割に縛られず自由に課題に取り組んでいました。自ら学ぼうとする彼らの自立した姿勢に、本当に感銘を受けました。

In the Japanese calligraphy activity, many children wanted to write their names in Katakana. When they finished, they looked very happy and proud. One student said, "I want to give this to my mother as a gift." I’m sure her mother will be very happy to receive it. Both the younger and older children seemed to have a lot of fun. Some students asked us, "How do I do this?" or "l finished it! Is it good?" They talked to us a lot and eagerly showed us their work.

書道では、多くの子どもたちが自分の名前をカタカナで書くことに興奮していました。完成した作品を見て、みんなとても嬉しそうで誇らしげでした。ある生徒が「これをお母さんにプレゼントしたい」と言ってくれて、とても感動しました。低学年の子が注意深く指示を聞く一方で、高学年の子は一生懸命に作業に集中していました。多くの生徒が「これはどうやるの?」と聞いたり、完成したカエルのおもちゃを見せたりと、熱心に話しかけてくれました。

Explaining things in English was difficult, and the students spoke very fast. However, they were very kind. They listened to my simple English and followed my instructions. The activities went smoothly because they were very cooperative. At the end, some students said, "I want to do more!" This made me so happy and I felt glad that I came today. Through this experience, I learned that communication is not just about perfect grammar; the most important thing is the heart to connect with each other. I will try my best to improve my English in the remaining time.

英語での説明は難しかったです。簡単な言葉しか使えず、生徒たちの話すスピードも速くて理解するのが大変でした。しかし、子供たちはとても親切で協力的だったので、すべてがスムーズに進みました。最後に「もっとやりたい!」と言ってもらえた時、ここに来て本当に良かったと感じました。この経験を通して、コミュニケーションは完璧な文法がすべてではなく、互いにつながろうとする「心」が最も重要だと学びました。残りの滞在期間、英語を上達させられるよう精一杯頑張ります。

As you can see, our students are making some really important connections during their time abroad!
